Tournament Report: Hawg Hunters – Austin Lake

Sunday was our Hawg Hunters event on Austin Lake; in all honesty it didn’t have a very good start. When we arrived at the lake we realized another club was already there even though we had secured our exclusivity permit. Talk about a rough way to start out the day.

We began our event at 6am; we quickly ran to the east side of the lake and drifted south. The action was slow to begin with until my father got into a school with his Firetiger Super Spot; I even joined him with a Jackall Aska. Around 7:00 we bagged 3 keepers in 4 casts while drifting the center of the lake, other anglers in the same area were fishing plastics and had success. The winning angler was my Uncle Kurt and his partner Chuck using spinnerbaits; they filled a limit of 9.90lbs in the southern bay. Our fish that allowed us to secure big fish was caught in the middle of the lake both horizontally and vertically using a 1/4oz bullet weight and a Gulp! Sinking Minnow in 5ft of water.

A big congrats to my Uncle Kurt and Chuck on first place with 9.90lbs, Doug & Bernie securing 2nd place with 9.77lbs, and Vick and Brandy grabbed third with 9.06lbs. We grabbed big bass with 3.45lb smallmouth; the next closest fish was a 2.76lb largemouth. Overall the club brought in 77.17lbs, I would call that a successful day.
