Partly cloudy skies and rising water temps found us in the back bays on Upper Crooked today. The huge pad fields are still easy to get through and to fish through with many fish in them ready to bite. The very back of the high school bay was loaded with carp and not many bass so we worked our way toward the main lake and half way there we started to find pods of fish in the center of the pad fields. The swim jig was the ticket for bigger fish today with numbers of small fish being caught on flukes near the outer edges.
Most of the bays around the lake were holding good numbers of fish but they seemed to be more toward the main lake. The shore lines behind the pads had better fish but they were hard to get to and even harder to get the fish out of. We would have more info on the bass locations but we got into some good crappie on the outer edges of the pads and got hungry for some fillets. Small flukes worked great on the crappie and small bass with the bigger fish coming on five inch flukes and swim jigs.
We found pike scattered from the very back of the bays to the first drop on the main lake so if you’re looking for them just fish what you’re comfortable with and you will get some action. If you have a hankerin for some bowfishing the back bays are loaded already with carp of all sizes and they seemed to not be as shy as they will be later on. From panfish to northerns Upper is ripe for the pickin right now.
