Lake Report: Saddle Lake – Grand Junction, MI

Saddle Lake
Grand Junction, MI

With our bass boat still in the shop we headed out in our 12′ duck boat, 45lb trolling motor attached we took off from the landing and headed out to the other side of the lake by way of under the bridge. After emerging from the other side of the bridge I tied on a Chaotic Baits spinnerbait and tossed it out, on the second cast the spinnerbait stopped so I responded by setting the hook. The spinnerbait for some reason found its way into the belly of a Common Carp, this fight was INSANE!

After setting the hook the bait just stopped then began to pull drag like nothing else, after I had got it to stop again it blitzed the boat, we scrambled to spin the boat around 2 or 3 times before cutting power to the motor, once we did so the carp darted to the other side of the boat one last time. After a couple minutes of being man-handled I tightened the drag and winched the bad boy in, my father netting the guy for me and we gave out a big “YAHOO!”

All of that excitement followed us throughout the day, the only issue we had though was the rest of the day was slow. With the bass still in an early pre-spawn pattern they were hard to budge but my father did get a few to bite which made me become the designated net man for the rest of the trip.
